Center of the American West Internship Program Opportunities:
The Center of the American West Internships Program offers opportunities for CU-СÀ¶ÊÓÆµ undergraduates (juniors and seniors) to work for public and private organizations on projects that deal with Western topics and issues, and offer professional training for the student.
These 3-credit hour internships foster students’ development as community leaders working for a sustainable West. Interns must register for the Center of the American West Internship Program course, CAMW3939. They are required to work a total of 120 hours for their employer over the semester, and must also complete academic assignments including weekly journal entries, mid-term and final reflection papers, and a final presentation.Ìý
To qualify, applicants must be current degree program students at CU-СÀ¶ÊÓÆµ with a minimum of 60 credit hours in progress at time of application, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. History Colorado: Exhibition Development Internship
Internship Location: Hybrid - remote and in person at the History Colorado Center, Denver, COÌý
Stipend: $1,500. The stipend is not salary or compensation. The stipend is meant to support study and research during the tenure of the appointment and will be issued upon completion of the internship.Ìý

Desired Schedule:Ìý 5-8 hours/week (August 25, 2025 - December 12, 2025; flexible start date can be determined with student’s school schedule)
Broad Scope of Position: Join the History Colorado Exhibitions team to gain meaningful knowledge of and experience in museum exhibition development. The Exhibition Development Intern will work under the supervision of an Exhibition Developer and Historian. Duties will include:
- Contribute to the development of museum exhibitions, including object research, writing, and administrative tasks.
- Assist with the creation and implementation of exhibition evaluation surveys for current and upcoming exhibitions, including drafting questions, surveying visitors, processing response data, and reporting findings.
- Participate in at least one day of install for the upcoming Marquee Exhibition opening in November 2025.
- Complete monthly readings relating to exhibition development and interpretation.
Outcomes: The intern will learn about exhibition development and general museum practices. They will also grow their professional network by working with and benefiting from mentorship from the Exhibition Developer and Historian team. They will be familiar with many of the steps to executing the development and installation of an exhibition. The intern will complete at least one evaluation survey from origination to a report of findings.Ìý

Broad Scope of Position: This internship provides selected candidates the opportunity to share their passion for history with students in a museum setting and engage with diverse student learners from all over Colorado and beyond. The intern will lead facilitated school tours, maintain school program materials, work collaboratively with volunteers and staff, and attend school program meetings where they will participate actively in discussions that shape the school programs at the museum.Ìý Working with the School Programs Manager and Coordinator, the interns will learn how to successfully lead school program experiences in a museum.Ìý
Outcomes:Ìý The intern will gain on-the-job training and skills in inquiry-based, standards aligned teaching, as well as customer service.Ìý By the end of the internship, the intern will have developed best practices pedagogy through collaboration with experienced educators, group/class management skills, Colorado history content, leadership and customer services, and build connections with influential professionals in museum education and other related fields.Ìý The intern will also assist with welcoming school groups and provide administrative support to the Education Department.

Qualifications:ÌýÌýÌýÌý
Informal teaching experience with children, experience in an educational setting (formal or informal), excellent customer service, ability to interact professionally with members of the public, interest in acquiring education skills within the museum field, and passion for history or museum studies. Candidates should also have robust writing abilities, a can-do attitude, the willingness and flexibility to help with a variety of exhibit-related tasks, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
Desired Skills & Academic Field of Study: Undergraduate, Graduate students, or recent graduates in the Education, History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Sociology, and Child Development preferred.Ìý Must be enthusiastic, hardworking with excellent communication skills.Ìý Formal or informal teaching experience with children ages 5 – 18.Ìý Desire to learn about education in a museum setting.Ìý Spanish language is a plus (but not required).
Timeline: The selected candidate will interview with the School Programs Manager prior to being confirmed for the CAW internship.
- September 1 - 29th, 2025: During the first month of the CAW internship, the intern will read and review materials remotely and is not expected to be at the History Colorado Center.
- September 30th, 2025: Intern Orientation is September 30th, from 9:00-2:00 at the History Colorado Center.
- October, 2025: The in-person training period lasts 2-3 weeks and will begin the first week of October.

THE NATURE CONSERVANCY - Science and Conservation Intern
Work with The Nature Conservancy’s science and conservation program staff to manage a variety of projects related to land and water conservation, and with other staff in the СÀ¶ÊÓÆµ office on special projects. There will be opportunities to learn about conservation career options from staff in various departments (science, conservation programs, policy, marketing, legal, and fundraising) and to attend special events with visiting guest speakers.

Position Descriptions
The Sand Creek Massacre Foundation is hoping to establish an internship for the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters involving Front-End Web Development and Back-End Web Development. If an interested student has qualifications that would allow them to carry out all of the necessary tasks, the two roles outlined below could be combined into one.
Additionally, it would be ideal for one interested student to participate in the internship throughout both semesters – However, it would also be acceptable for a different intern to occupy the position each semester. During the Fall 2025 semester, the internship will likely focus on planning and selection of tools. During the Spring 2026 semester, the internship will likely focus on final development and implementation.
The intern(s) will assist with the development of a secure website that will serve as a resource for descendants of the Cheyenne and Arapaho individuals present at the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864. The website, which will function as a robust genealogical database, will allow users to access, share, and record information pertaining to their ancestral lineage.
INTERNSHIP 1 – FRONT-END WEB DEVELOPER
Overview
Front-End Web Developer will enhance usability, ensure cross-browser compatibility, and optimize web pages for performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing user interfaces. Build engaging and responsive interfaces using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Collaborating with team members. Work with Back-End Developer and other SCMF staff/contractors to create functionality and cohesive designs.
- Implementing responsive design. Optimize web pages for usability across devices, including desktops, tablets, and mobile phones.
- Ensuring cross-browser compatibility. Test and fix compatibility issues in different browsers and environments.
- Debugging and troubleshooting. Identify and resolve functionality issues to ensure smooth user experiences.
- Understanding of data/content management systems.
Qualifications
- Education. Candidate ideally has (or is in the process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science, graphic design, or a related field.
- Experience. 1-3 years of experience in front-end development or similar roles.
- Technical skills. Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and frameworks like React, AngularJS, or Vue.
- Communication skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills are needed for effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
- Problem-solving. Excellent troubleshooting and debugging skills to resolve technical challenges.
- Design principles. Knowledge of UI/UX design concepts, visual elements, and responsive design best practices.
- Version control. Experience with Git or other version control systems for code management.
- Soft skills. Teamwork, adaptability, and a proactive approach to project deadlines.

INTERNSHIP 2 – BACK-END WEB DEVELOPER
Overview
Back-End Web Developer will be responsible for designing and maintaining scalable web services, managing databases, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure seamless integration between the front and back end.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain server-side applications. Build scalable and secure web services using backend programming languages like SQL and database design principles, MySQL, SQL Server or DBMS tools, Python, Ruby, Java, or Node.js.
- Manage databases and data storage. Optimize database performance using tools to ensure secure and reliable data management.
- Collaborating with team members. Work with Front-End Developer and other SCMF staff/contractors to ensure alignment between server-side functionality and user interfaces.
- Implement APIs and frameworks. Design and implement RESTful APIs to facilitate communication between server-side applications and end-user systems.
- Conduct troubleshooting and debugging. Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, and server-side errors to maintain system stability.
- Optimize scalability and workflows. Develop reusable code and scalable solutions to accommodate future growth.

Qualifications
